Editorial Reviews

Citizen: In The Next Life is Billy Sherwood s second release in the Citizen series, which follows the concept that he started with the Citizen album released in November 2015. The songs describe the individual experiences in a journey through time and space of a character, The Citizen through his own eyes: from an appearance in the Berlin bunker as Adolf Hitler in the final days of WWII to the Impressionist painter Monet, then as Stephen Hawking exploring the depths of the mind and the universe, Wyatt Earp, the legendary sheriff of Tombstone, Christopher Columbus, Romeo Montecchi and Mata Hari, among other real and fictitious characters.

Without the guest musicians that graced every song on The Citizen, this is a fantastic showing of Billy's skills on multiple instruments, his unparalleled songwriting, vocal abilities and sparkling production skills. This guy can do it all...from producing engaging tribute albums and writing modern sounding and old school progressive music to filling the unfillable shoes of Chris Squire as the bassist in Yes and John Wetton in Asia. Very highly recommend this album. If you've never heard of Billy Sherwood, The Citizen and Citizen: Next Life are a very good place to start.

The ever-prolific and supremely talented Billy Sherwood (currently the bassist in Yes, having replaced the late Chris Squire) has released his latest solo album that as Shatner would say, “ponders the mystery”. “Citizen” is a concept album about a fictional character (Citizen) who searches for the answers to the big questions by having conversations with such notables as Stephen Hawking, Monet, Wyatt Earp, Christopher Columbus, among others. The album ends with the Citizen having found no answers, saying, “Let’s just see where we go....”

HOWEVER, the version of the album released in Japan, adds a track at the end that changes the dynamic of the whole thing: “Amazing Grace”. Long-time Yes fans will recall that Chris Squire’s bass solo in concert was always this beloved hymn. A tribute? Certainly. But Sherwood adds a line to the song: “Citizen once lost, has now been found” - suggesting that the Citizen has indeed found an answer. Read into that what you will. It’s like a movie with two different endings.

Sherwood plays everything on this, so what we have here is truly a “solo” album. I highly recommend it, but track down the Japanese import if you can. The inclusion of one extra song offers a truly amazing listening experience.
