- Reviewed in the United States on August 11, 2016These are outstanding performances, at least as good as any I have ever heard, and very well recorded. Highly recommended.

3.0 out of 5 stars Sehr gute frühe Symphonien
Der Zyklus von Petrenko überzeugt mich nicht. Aber zumindest sind die Aufnahmen der 1. und 2. Symphonie wirklich gut. Weniger mitreißend ist dann die Aufnahme der 5. Symphonie. Aber immerhin.

5.0 out of 5 stars Recommended with all possible enthusiasm
These performances are genuinely sensational.
The Firdt hangs together much more convincingly than I have ever heard, thanks to swift pacing and complete commitment from the orchestra. Despite the energy there is no lack of atmosphere, either.
The Second is thrilling and extremely well played. With such clarity during even the densest and fastest passages this performances catches the ear so often that it felt like I was hearing it for the first time.
But the pinnacle of the set is surely the Fifth, which is dark, trenchant and brooding of tone. That said, it’s fast too. You’d think that light lighten the mood but it doesn’t for me. The playing throughout is magnificent; the amazing speed of articulation near to the close has to be heard to be believed!
The recorded sound is excellent. I often struggle with recordings from Liverpool Philharmonic Hall and often find them cramped. This is certainly ‘up front’ but it expands well.
For these three symphonies I would, personally, recommend them over almost
any other i’ve heard. Perhaps the Jurowski LPO Fifth is just as good, but otherwise these could easily be library choices. Now onto the second set to complete the Six.....

5.0 out of 5 stars 5 Stars +

5.0 out of 5 stars perhaps I'm biased?
Try and find a better performance and recording... you won't find one! All three superb and I'd bet even the Concertgebouw wouldn't match this. OK! I live on the doorstep of the R.L.P.O and I've seen them hundreds of times over the decades. That aside, this recording would make Tchaikovsky stand up and applaud. Just hope you've got a fine system to run it through. You need a very good "front end" CD a good amp and good speakers; always remember, if your CD player gives the amp garbage to amplify, the amplifier will give the speakers garbage to tranduce. That aside, I defy you to find a better recording.

4.0 out of 5 stars Useful recent recordings of symphonies 1,2 and 5
I particularly liked the recording of Tchaikovsky's 1st symphony and the rest are well played.
