Two CD set. 2017 live release from the rock icon. Winwood: Greatest Hits Live is a collection sourced from Steve's personal archives of live performances. With a 23-song track list handpicked by Steve, featuring his best-loved songs, Greatest Hits Live offers fans a definitive musical portrait of his five-decade career. The package features rare, previously unreleased material touching on all aspects of Winwood's extensive catalog, including contemporary arrangements of the music he created with the Spencer Davis Group, Traffic, Blind Faith, and on his classic solo recordings. The collection channels R&B, jazz, funk, folk, classic rock, pop, and Afro-Caribbean and Brazilian rhythms, highlighting Winwood's unique ability to fuse multiple genres into a singular, cohesive musical expression. I initially reviewed this on the basis of disc one, giving it five stars and waited to listen to disc two until I after I heard the new LCD Sound System, Two great releases on one day!
I then was disappointed to discover that despite there being no indication of it in the liner notes only the first four songs on disc 2 were performed by the band on the first disc. The next four had an electric bass--another reviewer thinks they are from the 1994 Traffic reunion tour. They are, in fact, quite good but very different in feel. The next and final four cuts are very poppy and 80s in their production and, although well played, a distraction from the rest of the album. I have thus lowered my rating to 4 stars.
Still, the rest of album is a fascinating and a truly pleasurable reworking of Winwood's musical legacy. If you are a fan of Winwood I would not hesitate to buy it for the tracks played by his current band. Just realize that the music is not accurately represented in the liner notes and consider the rest "bonus tracks."
Some artists become bored with their hit material. If this was the case, it sure doesn't show in this album. Winwood is still in fine voice and his Hammond B3, guitar and mandolin work is still first rate. He Is invested in his material and it shows! There is no "phoning it in" on any song. And we certainly can't complain about the very reasonable price for this two-CD set.
Let me say a word about the recording quality of the two-CD package. Sad to say, but many of today's recordings sound terrible. The sound is overly compressed and mashed together without a hint of dynamic range and plenty of distortion. The computer electronics used to record and mix modern albums is often all too apparent and heard in the album's audio flaws. Happily, "Winwood Greatest Hits Live" avoids many of these pitfalls. I listened to the CDs with a high end system in a studio designed for audio. The frequency response is excellent, there is a nice dynamic range and the clarity is excellent.
The only sonic negative that I heard was the tell-tale sound of ProTools. This recording and mixing software is very commonly used and has a characteristic harshness that is most noticeable in vocals. On a good audio system, if you listen closely enough, you will hear that harshness in Winwood's vocals. Still, essentially, every recording studio uses ProTools today, so I suppose that we have to live with this audio blemish on today's recording and re-masters.
No details are offered as to where the individual songs were recorded and when. Presumably, the songs were recorded in different venues and at different times. If so, the consistency of the performances and recodings is impressively consistent.
Otherwise, there isn't much to complain about an much to like. "Winwood Greatest Hits Live." All told, it is an exceptional album.

While you see a chance", "Arc of a diver") .
On assiste donc à un panorama couvrant les phases de cette carrière riche par la qualité sinon par la quantité .
"I'm a man" et "Gimme some loving" ne souffrent pas d'une version plus dépouillée . "Can't find my way home" est
plus belle que jamais même sans la guitare d'Eric . "Traffic" est représenté par les inévitables ("Low spark...", "Dear Mr Fantasy", "Empty pages" "John Barleycorn" qui parait moins long, j'avoue . Deux reprises ("Them changes", dispensable et "Why can't we live together ?", toujours intéressant . Enfin, la voix de Stevie est plus gorgée de "soul" que jamais .
Un troisième cd n'aurait pas déparé tant il reste de pépites regrettablement absentes .
